Busking on the street
powered by ODEO
Busking On The Street:
In Australia and in America, it is popular for students and the unemployed to busk
on the streets. They may play an instrument or they may sing or act a play. This man has chosen an act with a string
puppet that he is managing extremely well indeed.
The Puppet sings using a miniature microphone and his mouth mimes words and makes comments.
There is a cap on the floor for people to give donations, and looking into it, you will see that
he has only collected a few coins. The drama created by the puppet, when he shows the audience that they
are expected to give a small donation, is very expressive. His body language is wonderful, and
he does manage to get another coin for his trouble.
I have seen buskers in Korea too. I saw a lady playing a flute, and at Boyang I saw a man playing a violin
rather well. One evening, in the subway in Seoul, I saw a group acting, and after watching them, I realised it
was busking by students.
Busking is not as popular here in Korea as it is in other parts of the world, but nowadays
it is also happening.

A: Where are you going on Saturday?
B: I am going to Seoul with a few friends to watch a concert.
C: What sort of concert?
B: My friend is playing his guitar and singing songs at 'The Irish Festival' in Itawan.
A: That sounds fun. Is he singing alone or with a group?
B: He sings alone, but this time I think he is with the group. There are about four
of them.
C: What instruments do they play?
B: Well Von plays the bass guitar, John plays the drums, there is another guitar and some
percussion. They sound good and I like them.
A: I will be in Seoul on Sunday, as I am going to a wedding on Saturday. Will I be able to
go to the Festival with you?
B: I will meet you there. Get off at Itawon Subway and follow the signs to the Park.
C: That sounds like fun. I would like to go too.
B: Wonderful. I will look for you near the stage on Sunday. It starts at 2, and we can meet
earlier.
A/C: OK. We will try and find you, and maybe we can have some lunch too.
B: That is a good idea. I look forward to seeing you on Sunday. OK.
