Ideas are to literature what light is to painting. (Paul Bourget)

Light is a thing that cannot be reproduced, but must be represented by something else – by color. (Paul Cezanne)

Concept:   Teaching students to be aware of what is outside when painting. To 'ground' work by using a horizon, to create depth and distance by using perspective, and to create light by using an Impressionist or Post-Impressionist style.

General Goal:  To draw and/or paint the school yard using a realistic approach based on an impressionist style of painting.

Specific Objectives:  To concentrate on light and shade by using one  Impressionist style of Painting.

Required Materials: Pencils for first sketches, and red, yellow and blue paint plus a small brush for the painting.

Lead-In: Examine  paintings from the various Impressionist artists and discuss similarities and differences. Compare them with a photograph and works of earlier realistic landscape artists.  Discuss what is happening in Art.

Task 1:  Have the students write a critique on 5 specific paintings, one from each of the following Impressionist artists of the 1800's; List title, artist, date and include a small thumbnail sketch and describe the painting as you see it. (60-80 words per artist minimum)
Discuss colors, tone, form, light, paint, brush strokes, effect, what artist was showing and how you feel about the work.
Sisley: Field Guard from the forest of Fontainebleu 1870
Pissarro:Landscape near Chaponvale.1880
Seurat: Scene near Courbevoir 1885/6
Monet: The Scene at Bougival 1869
Van Gogh: Sunrise at San-Remy 1869

Task 2:   Paint the school yard in the style of one of these painters,
and/or
Copy one of these paintings.

Pre Lesson: Sketching the yard using pencils, charcoal or conte
Follow-Up: Students to sketch and paint a scene from their own home or the neighbourhood

Bridged the Gap between Realism and Impressionism

Assessment:
  • Write a critique on your own work and have 3 other students write a critique on your work as well.
  • Hand this task in for teacher assessment Part 1.(due Monday of next week.)
  • Your Visual Diary must also presented for a mark.

Extension:    Ongoing...(you can add to it whenever)
  1. Create a list of artists/painters from this period, with at least 2 paintings from each artist. Call it "Impressionism Who's Who" and add to the list as you meet new artists.
  2. Categorize the period into Realism (Courbet), pre-impressionism (Manet), Impressionism, Neo-Impressionism. Know what these terms mean.
  3. Identify the different names for styles..eg Pointillism
