News 1. Fishing Ban on the Yangtze River.

China Daily. China Today. 17 April 2002.

A spring fishing ban has been in place on the Yangtze River since the beginning of April. This is the first time a river fishing ban has been imposed in China, and it follows an all-round fishing ban in coastal areas introduced in 1999.

All fishing on main streams, tributaries and lakes of the Yangtze River area has been banned from April 1 to June 30.

Experts believe that in the long run, the ban will benefit fishermen and the ecological environment.

The main hope is that the spring fishing ban will improve spawning conditions, as increasing fish stocks is essential to the survival of the industry.

Because there are no English texts for me to work with, I have chosen to use articles from newspapers, magazines and research documents which are being slightly simplified in the beginning for student use.
As students  reading confidence improves, the articles will be taken directly from the papers.
