Developing Fluency in the English Language.

Language must be Heard and Spoken...

Movies with Chinese Subtitles.
Once students have a basic vocabulary and can understand and follow a simple conversation, it is time to increase their knowledge of words as well as their fluency.
Just learning words and grammar from dictionaries and textbooks is not enough as language is living and needs to be used to be understood.
The first step once a student has basic skills is to introduce English movies with chinese subtitles so the students can understand the story while they try to listen for words they know and also follow movie sessions with discussions on the movies.
This is a real way of creating useful word lists. Students will not hear until they know what to listen for so the aim of this part is to build vocabulary related to the movies.
There are many Teaching English CD's with news items and questions following. These can be used as well.
Repetition is important if students are to learn words. Play the extracts two or three times if necessary.
Have students follow movies by reading the chinese subtitles with follow up sessions in English.
Prepare questions that have to be answered by the students.

Movies with English Subtitles..
Now the student has to read the English subtitles and listen to the spoken english on the screen. The listening is subsidised and helped by the writing as many students can read English before they can speak English in China.
Students may need to watch the movie more than once and often the second and third time it is far better.
Discussion sheets and questionaires can now be given before the movie so students know what they are looking for.
The questions can be deeper asking for characteristics and personalities of characters rather than straight event questions. Have students analyze the film and write reviews.
English -to-go has a great James Bond Class lesson which can be a starting point. The discussions are as important as the written tasks.
Have students prepare a timed one-minute speech to follow the movie and have all students give their speech to a partner or to the class. Have students give the speaker a mark. Use the finfers for a score out of either 5 or 10.
Take these sessions to give pointers on poise, presentation, clarity of voice, interest and formation. The mini-speech should have an introduction, body and conclusion.
Use the old classics... Sound of Music, Ben Hur, Charlie Chaplin etc.
Use any movies with english subtitles and beware that X rated movies are not suitable.

Movies with No Subtitles..
These can only be of use with students who have a reasonable grasp of the language. It is a waste of time if they haven't. Far better to use movies with english subtitles if they are intended to be a learning experience.
These movies will be used when students have passed a 6.5 level of IELTS and can follow a reading or story with reasonable ease.
Or just use them for pleasure but do not assume they are of value.
Same with using chinese movies ...they will not teach Language..just the story..
Try not to waste student  time...Make sure every movie is followed by a talking session. Always allow students to present prepared or impromptu speeches that are timed after a movie.
Have students keep a record of the movies they have watched with comments, characters, dates, etc.
