Such a Lot to Talk About....

Comprehension  after Reading.
Have the students work in pairs or in groups, discussing an aspect of the reading material. This is more effective than reporting to a group as a whole as every students gets a chance to speak and be heard.
Emphasize the need for asking the question clearly and responding clearly so the partner can understand.
In large classrooms, talking to the person next door is excellent, if movement is not possible.
Use the comprehension questions that follow a passage of reading, or use the discussion activities given with many lessons.
Do not avoid activities requiring the students to talk as they are often the most beneficial for the student.

30 Second or 60 second Prepared Timed Speeches.
The emphasis is on prepared and also timed so the student can practice what is going to be said and keep it to a deadline.
Use simple topics about themselves and their interests or their town and then move onto topics based on the readings, news items or class movies. Shared outings and excursions are best if you have them, this is not easily possible in China, especially when there is no budget for this area and the teacher pays the expenses herself.
The students enjoy this activity and soon get into a very relaxed routine. If time is a factor, have the student perform to a partner or a small group.
For added interest viewers are given 5 areas to mark the speaker on..clarity, interest, preparation, gammar and confidence. Pointers are given to students on how to disguise nervousness, and how to stand and present themselves to their best adventage using old fashioned Toastmasters and Speaking techniques.

Show and Tell.
Don't forget the old fashioned 'Show and Tell' where the student brings an object or a picture and shows it to the class and gives a timed 30 second, or more, speech about the object.
A common theme may be suggested like bring something older than yourself, bring something with a purpose, bring something you found on the way to class... Again having the other students mark the student by a show of fingers is good feed back and very positive a students are well aware of how they perform and appreciate having their perceptions substantiated.

Debates and Juries.
The more controversial the better..give students the opportunity to act out their views and dramatise for effect. Students really enjoy arguing opposing views to those they hold such as "Shooting Animals For Fun". It takes a bit of going to get chinese students to see the humourous side of things but it can be done and debates and Juries are a fantastic way of freeing students into taking parts and sides and expressing themselves forcefully to convince a judge or jury.

A Notice Board is a wonderful teaching aid..I am still waiting for one in my class...use a digital camera to record student activities and pin on a notice board. Keep up to date so students read the boards regularly.
